What is the Future of Book Trailers?

The consensus from the blogosphere seems to be that one thing is certain, book trailers are not going away. I guess the existence of this site is in itself an indication of that. But how will this new connection between book and reader evolve? I try to think of analogs - how the crassness of early TV commercials have refined into ‘placements’ integrated seamlessly into our daily experiences, or how the revolutionary art of music videos ended up developing a formulaic, air-brushed tumor that has eclipsed all but a few sparks of that original creativity.

The players may be similar - from the small independents to the big corporate houses - all creative in their own right. But the stage is new - interactive, dynamic, more viewer-driven than any outlet of the past. The tools are more accessible - open source, creative commons, affordable digital imaging software and equipment. But are the skills less specialized? We’ve seen a lot of great book trailers so far, but the ones that make us sit up, that are compelling, that draw us into the story, the tone, the pathos of the book, those are the reason book trailers are more than just a fad.

What are your thoughts on the future of book trailers?

  1. Book trailers are here to stay. Or, at least until YouTube and MySpace fold. lol
As the CEO of the top book trailer producer in the US, and the copyright holder to the term “book trailer” I’m thrilled to see so many people enjoying them!
I love this site and will visit often!
